Pesticides are an important tool for farmers, foresters, lawn care providers and you. Pesticides have many benefits, including:
- Control weeds, insects, diseases and other pests in crop production, which allows farmers to produce a safe and bountiful food supply to feed a growing population. Without pesticides to protect food crops from insects, weeds, diseases and other threats, it’s projected that overall crop yields could be cut in half, and food prices would soar.
- Pesticides help farmers achieve higher yields, higher quality produce, lower production costs and increased yields.
- Yields of many crops could decrease by as much as 50% from current levels if there were no crop protection, due to losses largely to insects and pests. - Without pesticides, projections estimate production costs would rise by 75%, retail food prices would rise 27%, returns to producers would fall 30% and domestic consumption would decrease by 11%.
- Control insects and rodents in and around our homes and public buildings includingrestaurants, hospitals and schools.
- Prevent disease in our homes. Pesticides are used in household paints, personal hygiene products and in algaecides, which are used to help maintain clean water in swimming pools.
- Control insects, weeds and diseases in our green spaces, including parks and golf courses. Pesticides reduce our exposure to allergens such as ragweed pollen and create safe sports and recreation surfaces.
- Control pests like fleas and ticks that irritate our pets and scabies that could infect our children in schools.
- Preserve wood used for decks or outdoor structures and prevent termite infestations indoors.
- Maintain safe and accessible railways, electrical transmission lines and pipelines through weed and pest control.
