Urban pesticide use – facts you ought to know
- Pesticides serve as useful tools for protecting people and property. They are safe, they are effective and they are already well regulated by Health Canada.
- Well-maintained public and private spaces make for happier, healthier communities. Green spaces contribute to people’s mental and physical well-being, they fill an important role in our environment and they also contribute economically through tourism and business activity.
- Pesticides exist to protect those benefits from insects, weeds or diseases that threaten these valuable spaces.
- Natural does not equal safe which is why Health Canada assesses all pesticides – regardless of whether they are natural or synthetic – to ensure they can be used safely.
- Bans that ignore the scientific evidence that existing federal regulations are based on actually jeopardize the health and safety of the very communities governments say they are trying to protect.
- Public policy needs to be based on facts, not on fear and misinformation.
