Responsible Use/IPM
Under the Stewardshipfirst™ banner CropLife Canada has numerous initiatives that encompass responsible use and the IPM philosophy. The responsible use of crop protection products is undertaken within the context of promoting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, with the underlying principles that a crop protection product should be used only when necessary - "using the right tool at the right time".
CropLife Canada and its members support grower education with educational tools such as the “Pesticide Safety Handbook: Handling Guidelines for Growers”, which is a comprehensive guidebook that explains various fundaments of crop protection product use, such as following label directions, record keeping, IPM, storage and emergency response.
CropLife Canada in conjunction with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has developed a maximum residue limit (MRL) database. The MRL database provides the information necessary for Canadian growers planning to export commodities. MRL's are defined as the maximum concentration of a crop protection product residue (expressed as mg/kg), recommended to be legally permitted on food stuffs and animal feeds.
