representing Canada's plant science industry

Research & Development

The plant science industry is constantly trying to improve the quality and safety of its products to meet the needs of Canadian farmers and society. CropLife Canada member companies have brought to the market a significant number of more environmentally friendly and safer-to-use products in recent years. As well, products today are more targeted, and include new, safer and more effective active ingredients that permit lower use rates and products that biodegrade rapidly.

Products Today ensure their full benefit is derived while reducing the risks to human health and the environment. Reduced risk pesticides are more targeted, use lower concentration of active ingredient and are well-suited for integrated pest management - a system that combines chamical, biological and cultural practices with minimal environmental impact.
Biological and Chemical Pest Control Products Some fifty years of research, development and field experience around the world have resulted in new technologies, from biological to chemical, that are more targted and ensure they are only used when necessary to control pests.
Computer Technology is coming to the aid of farmers. Computers, global positioning systems, computer generated field maps, decision-support models, and specialized variable rate equipment modify input levels and to monitor final crop yield. These tools make application more precise resulting in the minimum pesticide being applied, improved pest targeting and reduced drift.

Just some of the innovative new ways our members have developed to reduce risk:

URBAN INNOVATIONS FOOD & FEED SAFETY AND SECURITY INNOVATIONS
Scotts has developed a new indoor pest spray made from chrysanthemum flower extract and canola oil. They currently provide the only alternative weed control product for home use. UAP has developed unique chemistry products from soybean derivitive lecithin. These allow for lower use rates, added crop safety, are bio-degradable for sustainability. Dow AgroSciences' Success© is a reduced-risk natural insecticide. It protects crops from many damaging insects while remaining safe for beneficial insects and bees.
