Plant Development

Research and DevelopmentPre-commercial market analysis is an important prerequisite in the development and commercialization of any new product or technology. In agriculture, this is especially important due to the increasing global trade in the products of agricultural innovations and their potential impact on international trade.

To increase public awareness, CropLife Canada members place information on the safety assessment of new biotechnology regulatory submissions on CFIA's Notice of Submission publicly accessible website, allowing input from the public and providing transparency for new products seeking regulatory approval in Canada.

Adhering to the most recent regulatory compliance guidelines and environmental safety is of paramount importance to Canadian scientists and researchers working with plants with novel traits, including those derived through biotechnology. Compliance Management for Confined Field Trials - CropLife Canada has developed a compliance management program for confined field trials of plants with novel traits, including genetically modified crops in Canada. The program provides training for research personnel conducting confined field trials in Canada, and establishes a uniform approach to compliance management that fully meets the requirements of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the authorizing regulatory body. The compliance management program consists of a one-day workshop of in-class instruction. At the workshop, participants are presented with an overview of Canada's regulatory framework for genetically modified crops, and a detailed presentation on the regulation of current season confined field trials and post-harvest trial sites - application, authorization, management, compliance and inspection. To date over 300 researchers have attended the workshop.
