Stewardship of innovative products starts at the research and development phase through a commitment by CropLife Canada members to follow sound research practices as set out in CropLife Canada’s Plant Biotech Code of Practice. This code describes companies’ commitment to a common set of business ethics and philosophies regarding biotech stewardship.
Research on new technologies encompasses the growing and testing of new plants first in a confined glasshouse and eventually in the field under strict confinement procedures set out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). As part of the industry’s initiatives to support the responsible use of plant biotechnology during the research and development stage, CropLife Canada developed a Compliance Management for Confined Field Trials workshop to provide training for research personnel conducting greenhouse and confined field trials for plants with novel traits (PNTs) in Canada.
