ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Canadians expect that every industry including agriculture embrace environmentally sustainable production. In Canada, we have developed systems such as conservation tillage to reduce the risk of soil erosion, improve soil quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Conservation tillage is possible through innovation in crop protection and plant biotechnology and is now practiced on more than 12 million hectares.
- Fuel requirements have proven to be reduced by about 40% under low tillage and by 70% under zero-till conservation farming practices.
- Similarly, water management is essential for environmentally sustainable solutions in agriculture. Global demand for water is on the rise, and over a billion people currently live without access to safe water supply.
- Improving irriation systems and investment in plant science can contribute to water efficiency and protection. Stress tolerant crops economize water consumption and biotechnology developments in drought resistance will improve water efficiency for our crops.
